James Edmund Caan (/kn/ KAHN; March 26, 1940 – July 6, 2022) was an American actor who received four Golden Globe nominations, an Emmy, and an Oscar. In 1978, Caan received a motion picture star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
After appearing in Howard Hawks’ El Dorado (1966), Robert Altman’s Countdown (1967), and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Rain People (1969), he rose to prominence as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather (1972), for which he received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actor. He returned as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather Part II (1974), making a brief cameo appearance at the end.
Caan appeared in a number of films, including Brian’s Song (1971), Cinderella Liberty (1973), The Gambler (1974), Rollerball (1975), A Bridge Too Far (1977), and Alan J. Caan was born on March 26, 1940, in The Bronx, New York City, to Jewish immigrants from Germany, Sophie (née Falkenstein; 1915-2016) and Arthur Caan (1909-1986).
His father was a butcher and meat dealer. Caan grew up in Sunnyside, Queens, as one of three siblings. He was raised in New York City and went on to attend Michigan State University (MSU).
During his two years at Michigan State, he was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. He wanted to play football at MSU but was unable to make the team.
He later transferred to Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, but did not complete his studies there. Francis Ford Coppola and Lainie Kazan were among his classmates at Hofstra.
However, while attending Hofstra University, he became interested in acting and was interviewed for, accepted for, and enrolled in New York City’s Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, where he studied for five years.
Sanford Meisner was one of his teachers. “I just fell in love with acting,” he said later. “Of course, every one of my improvs ended in violence.”
