Who is Kyle Rittenhouse?
Kyle Rittenhouse arrived in downtown Kenosha on Aug. 25, 2020, with at least one objective in mind: to join a gang of other armed individuals patrolling the city streets, providing medical assistance to strangers and protecting buildings from rioters.
Mr. Rittenhouse, then 17 years old, would end the night by killing two individuals and wounding another. He turned himself in to the police in Illinois, where he lived, a few hours later.
Mr. Rittenhouse had experimented with several identities laced with bravery and duty for most of his life, inflating his achievements and eventually dropping out of high school.
He had admired police enforcement since he was a child, attending a cadet program for at-risk children in his hometown of Antioch, Ill., and subsequently plastering Blue Lives Matter pictures and adulation for former President Donald J. Trump on his social media profiles. Mr. Rittenhouse was working part-time as a lifeguard at a recreational complex in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., near Kenosha, at the time of the shootings.
On Wednesday, Mr. Rittenhouse testified during his trial that he was a nursing student at Arizona State University.
Mr. Rittenhouse had enrolled in an online program that permits students to take coursework before applying for admission to the institution, according to Jay Thorne, a spokesman for the university. According to him, the online curriculum is unrelated to the university’s nursing school or any other degree program. Mr. Rittenhouse’s class started on October 13th.
His parents were divorced, and he shared an apartment with his mother, Wendy, in Antioch, a small town on the Wisconsin border. Dominick Black, the partner of Mr. Rittenhouse’s sister McKenzie, provided him with a male role model. The two young guys grew so close that they began to refer to one another as brothers.
Mr. Rittenhouse’s strongest link to Kenosha was Mr. Black, who was a key enabler of the August 2020 shootings. Mr. Rittenhouse, who was too young to lawfully acquire a firearm in Wisconsin at the age of 17, paid Mr. Black to purchase a military-style semiautomatic rifle for him at an Ace Hardware store in Ladysmith, Wisconsin.
On the night of the shootings, the two met with other armed people to protect Car Source, a used-car dealership where Mr. Rittenhouse carried his weapon and falsely claimed to be a qualified emergency medical technician.
Mr. Rittenhouse and his family supported far-right groups that rallied to his side after he was charged with six criminal offenses, including first-degree intentional homicide, Wisconsin’s most serious murder charge. They were unified in the idea that the deaths were acts of self-defense.
