Wood worked as a research scientist at Microsoft before joining the Ethereum team. During 2013-2014, he was a co-founder of the Ethereum blockchain, which he describes as “one computer for the entire planet,” along with Vitalik Buterin, Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio, and Joseph Lubin.
Wood proposed and contributed to the development of Solidity, a programming language for creating smart contracts. In 2014, he also published a paper defining the Ethereum Virtual Machine, the Ethereum runtime system for smart contracts.
He was also the first chief technology officer of the Ethereum Foundation. Wood resigned from the Ethereum Foundation in January 2016.
Wood and Jutta Steiner, who previously worked at the Ethereum Foundation, founded Parity Technologies (formerly Ethcore), which developed a client for the Ethereum network and creates software for businesses using blockchain technology.
In early 2016, the company released the Parity Ethereum software client, which was written in Rust. In 2018, he was the chief web officer at Parity.
Beginning with the Polkadot network, he established the Web3 Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to decentralized internet infrastructure and technology.

Early Life and Education
Wood was born in the English city of Lancaster. He was educated at Lancaster Royal Grammar School. He earned a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Computer Systems and Software Engineering from the University of York in 2002 and a PhD in 2005 with the title “Content-based visualisation to aid common navigation of musical audio.”
