Artis Leon Ivey Jr. (August 1, 1963 – September 28, 2022), better known as Coolio, was a rapper, record producer, and actor from the United States.

Coolio achieved mainstream success with his albums It Takes a Thief (1994), Gangsta’s Paradise (1995), and My Soul (1996) in the mid-to-late 1990s (1997).

He was best known for his Grammy Award-winning hit single “Gangsta’s Paradise,” which he released in 1995, as well as other singles “Fantastic Voyage” (1994), “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New)” (1996), and “C U When U Get There” (1997).

He was also known for writing the theme song for the Nickelodeon television show Kenan & Kel, “Aw, Here It Goes!” in 1996.

Coolio has released albums independently since 1996 and has also become a chef, creating a web series titled Cookin’ with Coolio and publishing a cookbook.

Ivey rose to prominence as a member of the Gangsta rap group WC and the Maad Circle, alongside WC and Crazy Toones.

In 1987, Coolio released his first single, “Whatcha Gonna Do?” In 1988, he also recorded “What Makes You Dance (Force Groove)” with Nu-Skool.

Coolio made connections in the Los Angeles rap scene and ended up joining the group WC and the Maad Circle, led by rapper WC, in 1991.

He is listed as a co-writer on the group’s debut album Ain’t a Damn Thing Changed, including the single “Dress Code.”
