Bukkapuram Nadella Yugandhar is an esteemed American former bureaucrat and the father of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella passed away in the city on Friday at the age of 82. Throughout his illustrious career, the 1962 batch IAS officer held several significant positions, including secretary to Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, director of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, and member of the Planning Commission.
B.N. Yugandhar was widely recognized for his unwavering dedication to civil services and concerted efforts in the field of rural development. Political leaders expressing their condolences described him as a “sincere, honest officer known for his simplicity.”
Former home secretary K. Padmanabhaiah, a close colleague and friend, spoke of Yugandhar’s dedication and belief in equal opportunities. He remembered Yugandhar as an extremely modest person who shied away from the limelight. Many batches of IAS officers trained at Mussoorie during his tenure, and Padmanabhaiah noted that Yugandhar left a lasting imprint on each one of them.
Following his retirement from public service, Yugandhar assumed the role of Managing Trustee for the COMMITMENTS trust. He planned to work with Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) at the grassroots level. His global exploration led him to select the Community Based Rehabilitation model for PwDs in various locations, including Kosgi, Doulthabad, Bomraspet, and Bala Nagar Mandals, as well as Kosgi Mandal in Mahabubnagar District.
The organization, under his guidance, has served more than 15,000 families in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Yugandhar’s enduring legacy lies in his demonstration of true and authentic goodness in both public and personal life. His compassion, simplicity, and lifetime of public service continue to inspire those within government and others who strive against it.
B.N. Yugandhar passed away on September 13, 2019, but his philosophy, ideas, and energy remain a guiding light for all.

Born on 19 August 1967 in Hyderabad into a Telugu-speaking Hindu family, Satya Nadella’s mother, Prabhavati, was a Sanskrit lecturer, and his father, Bukkapuram Nadella Yugandhar, served as an Indian Administrative Service officer of the 1962 batch.
Yugandhar hailed from Bukkapuram in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, with his father having migrated from Nadella village in Guntur district (now part of Palnadu district) of Andhra Pradesh to Bukkapuram.
Nadella began his educational journey at the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, and later earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka in 1988.
He continued his academic pursuits in the U.S., obtaining an MS in computer science from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee in 1990. Subsequently, Nadella earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1997.
