Brian Kemp Bio

Brian Porter Kemp (born November 2, 1963) is an American businessman and politician who has served as Georgia’s 83rd governor since January 2019.

Kemp, a Republican, served as Georgia’s 27th secretary of state from 2010 to 2018, and as a member of the Georgia State Senate from 2003 to 2007.

Kemp was born in Athens, Georgia, and attended the University of Georgia. Prior to entering politics, he owned a number of agribusinesses, financial services, and real estate firms.

He was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 2002. Kemp was appointed Secretary of State of Georgia by Governor Sonny Perdue in 2010, after Karen Handel resigned to run for governor.

Kemp was first elected to a full term as Georgia Secretary of State in 2010, and he was re-elected in 2014.

Kemp’s tenure as Secretary of State was contentious. He was chastised in 2015 after a data breach exposed the personal information of over six million voters to 12 organizations.

During the 2016 election, he was the only state official to refuse assistance from the Department of Homeland Security in preventing Russian meddling.

He ran for governor against Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams in 2018. He refused to resign as secretary of state while running for governor, sparking outrage and accusations of power abuse from Democrats.

Kemp received 50.2% of the vote in the general election, narrowly avoiding a runoff election.

On November 8, he resigned as Secretary of State. On November 16, Abrams suspended her campaign but refused to concede, accusing Kemp of voter suppression, which he denied.

There was no evidence that voter suppression influenced the outcome of the election, according to news outlets and political science experts.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kemp opposed face mask mandates and stay-at-home orders, and he prohibited localities from enacting stricter public health measures than the state as a whole.

Following the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, he was chastised by President Donald Trump for following state law, which required him to certify the results, despite Trump’s repeated false claims of election fraud.

Kemp signed the Election Integrity Act of 2021 into law in 2021, which expanded early in-person voting and increased state government control over local election officials.

In the Republican primary for governor ahead of his reelection campaign, he was challenged by former U.S. senator David Perdue; despite Trump’s endorsement, Kemp easily defeated Perdue.

Kemp defeated Abrams in a rematch in the 2022 Georgia gubernatorial election; she conceded defeat on election night.
