Alex Wagner was raised in Washington, D.C., where she was born. Before enrolling at Swarthmore College, her mother Tin Swe Thant, an immigrant from Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar (Burma), naturalized as a citizen of the United States.
Her father, Carl Wagner, was of Luxembourger and Irish ancestry and was from Lansing, Iowa. He co-chaired Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign and was a well-known political consultant for the Democratic Party.
She attended Woodrow Wilson High School and earned her degree in art history and literature from Brown University in 1999. Wagner was a devout Catholic growing up.

Career
Wagner has worked as the Center for American Progress’ cultural correspondent. She was the editor-in-chief of The Fader magazine, which covered music and cultural movements from around the world, from 2003 to 2007.
She was also the executive director of Not On Our Watch Project, a human rights advocacy organization focused on mass atrocities.
Wagner later became the White House correspondent for Politics Daily, an AOL News political news magazine. She moved to The Huffington Post after AOL purchased it.
Wagner appeared on Countdown with Keith Olbermann and The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell as an MSNBC analyst.
Wagner began hosting Now with Alex Wagner weekdays on November 14, 2011. (originally at noon ET, but later at 4 PM ET).
MSNBC President Phil Griffin announced the cancellation of the series on July 30, 2015, in an effort to shift the network’s daytime programming to more breaking news reporting and less political commentary and opinion.
The program’s final episode aired the following day. Later, MSNBC announced that Wagner would host a weekend show, but those plans were later scrapped.
